Snowfall has also been reported in the higher regions of the state. The capital city Dehradun, along with Mussoorie, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Roorkee, and Kumaon division has experienced continuous rains. Since yesterday, many parts of the state has seen continuing rainfall. Three people were killed and four were reported missing after a cloudburst in Uttarakhand on Sunday, 18 July, Inspector Jagdamba Prasad, team incharge, State Disaster Response Force told news. However, increased frequency of the natural occurence in recent months has been attributed to unusual warming of the region, reported ‘Down to Earth’. The 24 hour long red alert advisory began from Wednesday night. Cloudburst, which means sudden heavy rainfall in a short period of time in a given region, is not a new phenomenon for Uttarakhand, a hilly state located at the foothills of the Himalayas. Gusty winds with speed of 30-40 Kmph is also expected in isolated places in the plains of the state, the Met bulletin from Dehradun said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday said "heavy to very heavy" rainfall is expected at isolated places of Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Dehradun, Tehri, Nainital, Rudraprayag and Pithoragarh districts of the state. The meteorological department has also issued a red alert for heavy rains in Uttarakhand for the next 24 hours. Soon after the incident was reported, officials of the local administration rushed to the spot. The State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) has retrieved one body, while the search for missing persons is still underway.
